Pastoral: Quilting Ministry
Newcomers are always welcome among UUCD Quilters. We range from beginners to experts, so you can learn to quilt or share your knowledge with others while serving our community.
The quilting ministry is a great place to build and nurture community. Dorie Datel started the ministry in 2005 to make quilts for boys at the Progress Ranch foster homes. Since then, many folks have gathered to make bed quilts for Progress Ranch boys (more than 80 custom quilts from 2005 to 2023), for members of the UUCD church, and for the broader community including children in hospital care and people whose lives are disrupted by fires, floods and other challenges.
During the 2024-25 church year, we made and gave away about 50 quilts. Two of our more complex projects were making a stole for Rev. Angeline’s installation and an embroidered and quilted UU Values wall hanging for our church entry area.
Some of our sewing projects involve several people and many are done by only one person. We receive donations of quilting fabric that might otherwise go to the landfill, which allows us to make beautiful quilts with minimal expenditure. We enjoy meeting at the church where we can offer technique demonstrations, spread out on the social hall tables to plan future sewing projects, admire group members’ craft and sort items to be donated. It’s a great opportunity to learn and get help or to share your knowledge and skills while building lasting relationships with others in the group.
Meetings are held a few times each year and are announced in the church bulletin.
