Robin Datel: I’ve been attending UUCD since 1994 and became a member in 1998 alongside my mother, husband, and two sons. I’ve enjoyed serving the church in many ways, including teaching RE (kids and adults), co-chairing the Social Justice Coordinating Committee, and being part of our partnership with a Unitarian church in Transylvania. I have served previously on the Board, the Nominating Committee, the Committee on Ministry, and the Immigration Justice Team. Most recently, since retiring from Sacramento State as a geography professor, I have facilitated the Climate Crisis Action Team. The church has been the locus of celebrations of life for my mother and husband and the wedding of my younger son. On the grounds is a bench that memorializes my sister. Our church’s values and people are of great meaning in my life.

I am honored to be asked to return to the Board at this exciting time of welcoming a new settled minister.

Karen Russell: I joined this church in 1987, so I’ve been around for a few years!  It is the only church that fits my core beliefs.  I had a 2 year old at the time, and I wanted a place for both of us.  We started the Gaia family in my first year here, and it has been active ever since, meeting monthly for fun and fellowship together for about 37 years.  (My son is now 39.)

I enjoy doing volunteer work, especially coordinating things that help create community, such as the Gaia family, Circle Dinners, church auction dinners/events, the Sunday Welcoming volunteers, a variety of different social groups for UFC, and many more.

The Nominating Committee will be another opportunity for me to help this community.  Thank you.

Scott Steward he/him: I grew up in Davis and visited the church with my childhood friends.  Decades later, I returned to Davis with Karolyn and my two daughters and joined UUCD in 2005, recognizing many of the elders of the families I knew then.

I am inspired by the work of connecting our youth, and all our human spirits, to the vitality and awe of all of us on earth.  I have volunteered for the Campus Ministry Committee, Stewardship Committee (then called Generosity Committee), Greeting Committee, as a UUA General Assembly delegate and most recently with the RE Youth program,

I am deeply committed to our building and growing an accessible, beloved community.

Dawn Student, Hey Now! When I started attending UUCD in 1995, I was looking for a liberal religion that valued nature and thoughtful individualism, a respectful place for me and my kids that aligned with my core values. I was immediately drawn to RE in the bridgehouse and volunteered there many Sundays for 20+ years. I have been on the Religious Exploration Team, the FUUN Committee, Green Sanctuary, Welcoming Congregation, Intern and Campus Ministry Committees, Zoom Host and more. I have taught primary grades at the same school in south Sacramento for the last 30 years. I am retiring this June!

Karen Urbano has been a UU for over 40 years and a member of UUCD for fifteen years. She previously served on the board, as chair of the membership and Green Sanctuary committees. She also served on the boards of UU Justice Ministry of California and UU Ministry for Earth, as a member of the UUA Presidents Council, and as the Pacific Central District’s Chalice Lighter Coordinator and is currently on the PCD board as it transitions to a Pacific Western Region entity. She believes that membership involvement is crucial to a thriving church and looks forward to a new era with a new minister.
