Seeking the American Dream

The benefit dinner on August 9 will raise money for two nonprofit organizations: Davis Families Together and the San Francisco-based incubator kitchen La Cocina.

The Davis Families Together Project supports refugee families who are here legally seeking asylum. Started just over three months ago, the project currently provides housing and support for two families. An interfaith effort led by the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, the project receives support from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis and the justice ministry at the Davis United Methodist Church.

La Cocina works to boost business ownership for women, immigrants, low-income individuals, and people of color. The organization provides affordable commercial kitchen space, mentorship and access to sales opportunities. Founded in 2005, La Cocina has 32 vendors, six of which made the San Francisco Chronicle’s Top 100 Restaurant’s list in 2019.

The evening program will include a dinner menu that features selected recipes from La Cocina’s recently published cookbook.  Included in the price of an individual adult ticket, the book chronicles the organization’s growth through more than 40 compelling stories and 120 recipes from women who used their talent and food expertise to pursue economic freedom.

Guests will move to the church sanctuary after dinner for a program that includes speakers from the Families Together Project and La Cocina, a video and raffle prizes.
